Congenital pocomelia in monozygotic twins.

چکیده
Phocomelia is the congenital absence of legs and arms, resulting In the hands and feet being in close proximity to the trunk. Occasionally deformed intermediate segments may be demonstrated radiologically (Carey, 1919), though the limb girdles and digital elements may appear normal. In the past decade interest has been taken in abnormalities showing phocomelia as a result of thalidomide taken by the mother during pregnancy. It has been shown (Lenz and Knapp, 1962) that a critical period of sensitivity, 34 to 50 days after the last menstrual cycle or 20 to 36 days' ovulation age, exists in the human in those cases having thalidomide deformities. These results have recently been reproduced in mammals, including primates (Hendricks et al., 1966). Similar defects are known to have existed many years before the use of this drug. Introduction & Objective: The study of monozygotic twins is a valuable method for distinguishing the genetic and environmental etiologic factors. The purpose of this study was comparison between occlusal indices and dental arch dimensions in monozygotic twins. Materials & Methods: This descriptive study was preformed on 40 monozygotic twins that their permanent teeth were fully erupted. The ...
متن کاملAuricular septal defect in one of monozygotic twins.
In the cardiac clinic of the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, a 6-year-old girl with an auricular septal defect was found to have a monozygotic twin in whom the heart was normal. Instances of congenital heart disease in both of monozygotic twins have been reported by several authors. Smith (1929) observed a patent ductus arteriosus in both of twin boys of similar general appearance, size, a...
متن کاملCongenital scoliosis in monozygotic twins: case report and review of possible factors contributing to its development
BACKGROUND The exact etiology of congenital scoliosis remains unknown as yet. It seems that its development may be influenced by both genetic predisposition and environmental factors, at varying degrees. International bibliography features few cases of monozygotic twins with congenital scoliosis. The aim of this study is to report a case in monozygotic twins and review the literature relating t...
متن کاملVariable expressivity of congenital longitudinal radial deficiency and spinal dysraphism in monozygotic twins.
We report monozygotic twins with longitudinal radial hypoplasia and low (L5) spina bifida occulta, but with differing severity. There is only one previous report of similar twins. We report these identical twins with the expression of longitudinal radial hypoplasia with mirror image pattern on contralateral sides, and the association of low spina bifida occulta.
متن کاملTrisomy 13 in monozygotic twins discordant for major congenital anomalies.
The occurrence of trisomy 13 in twins is very rare. We report a pair of genotypically identical twins with trisomy 13 discordant for major anomalies. This case contributes to the already published data on the contribution of non-genetic factors to the aetiology of congenital malformations in monozygotic twins.
